Ask ten people how early to leave for the airport and you will get ten different answers. Our drivers get asked this every week, so here is how we actually work it out for a Spruce Grove pickup.
Start with the flight, not with your driveway
Airlines set their own cut-offs for dropping bags and getting through security, and they change now and then, so check your booking confirmation before anything else. A lot of them suggest about two hours ahead for a domestic flight and three for an international one. If your airline says three, believe it.
Then add the drive
From Spruce Grove it is about 55 km to the terminal. On a clear day that is roughly 40 minutes: east on Highway 16, around the ring road, then south on Highway 2. It is a simple drive. What trips people up is the stuff you cannot see on a map, like a stalled truck on the highway or the ring road at 7:45 on a weekday.
The buffer nobody wants to add
We pad every pickup. About ten minutes on a normal morning, and more from November to March, when a bit of snow can turn 40 minutes into an hour. A pickup that feels a little too early is nearly always better than a missed flight.
A worked example
Say your flight leaves at 7:30 a.m. and your airline wants you at the airport two hours ahead. That puts you at the terminal by 5:30.
- Take off the drive: 40 minutes, so you need to leave around 4:50.
- Add the buffer: 15 to 20 minutes.
- Pickup time: somewhere around 4:30 a.m.
Yes, it is early. That is what a 7:30 flight costs you, whether you drive yourself or not. At least in a cab you can sit there half asleep.
Afternoon flights are easier, but not free
A 2 p.m. flight feels relaxed, and that is exactly when people get caught out. If you are on the road between about 3 and 6, the ring road can eat 20 minutes you did not plan for. Leave a bit earlier than the morning maths would say.
Bags, check-in and the boring stuff
Checking in online before you leave the house saves a few minutes at the counter, and it means you find out about a seat problem or a schedule change while you still have coffee in your hand. If you are flying with only a carry-on, some airlines let you skip the bag drop, which changes your maths. Check your own airline, because they do not all work the same way.
Coming home is the easy half
Flights land early, flights land late, and bags take however long they take. For the ride back, we ask for your flight number so we know roughly when to expect you, and if the flight moves, tell us. Nobody is going to rush you out of baggage claim.
What happens at the airport end
We drop you at the departures level, close to the doors. The bags come out of the trunk, you say thanks, and that is the whole hand-off. If you are travelling with a lot of luggage, tell us when you book and we will send the bigger vehicle.
What if I am way too early?
Then you have a coffee and a long look at the departures board. Compare that with the alternative and it is not much of a price to pay. Nobody has ever missed a flight by arriving with time to spare.
